Four Things To Avoid When Moving

Posted on

Whether you are moving across the city, state, or country, the process of moving can be chaotic and stressful. Every step of the process has the potential for mistakes, from getting inaccurate quotes and hiring shady movers to packing too much stuff and failing to provide yourself with enough time to get your belongings set up at the new home. This article provides you with a list of things you should not do when moving.

Hiring a Dishonest Moving Company

Don't become a victim of a scam moving company. All you need to do to avoid this is do your homework. Check with the Better Business Bureau, the U.S. Department of Transportation, as well as your friends, family, and co-workers to find out if they know anything about the moving companies you are considering. You can also look online for reviews.

Failing to Get the Right Quotes

Reliable residential movers should be willing to provide you with an in-house moving estimate. If not, you may want to consider reaching out to another company. Additionally, don't just get one quote from one company; instead, you should obtain quotes from at least three different moving companies. If you prefer one company over another after you review all these quotes, but their prices are a little steep, see if you can negotiate the price down a little.

Packing Way Too Much Stuff

Take a close look at all of your stuff. Do you honestly need those clothes from high school that you haven't looked at in five or more years? Prior to your move, you need to take the time to declutter your belongings. If you haven't used or looked at items in the past year or so, then chances are you don't need them. Consider donating or selling unwanted items that aren't trash.

Not Scheduling Your Move Well in Advance

Depending on the time of year that you are moving, moving companies may be scheduled months in advance. Therefore, if you are expecting to call and schedule movers a couple of weeks before your moving day during the middle of summer, you can almost rest assured that no moving company will be available. Make sure to call weeks, if not months, in advance to schedule your moving company for the time frame that you need them for. Moving is stressful enough, and the last thing you need is to not be able to hire a moving company because you waited until the last minute to do so.
